Why Whatsapp Call is Blocked in UAE?

It is not a surprise that Whatsapp call is blocked in UAE and some other countries. Many people ask why this happens? Why Whatsapp call is blocked in UAE? There are several reasons for this and here are some most important of them:

  1. There are two government telecom companies in the United Arab Emirates and almost 80% of the population of UAE are expatriates. So blocking WhatsApp call will lead to huge revenue generation for these telecom companies.
  2. UAE wants to control all the VOIP calls and that is why services like Whatsapp, Skype, Apple Facetime, Viber are restricted in the country. Privacy is a big concern for some companies at least Skype and Apple.
  3. UAE is a monarchy, so they can set their own rules. Most of the time, their own citizens are safe and don't care about this stuff, and expats are usually paid a lot to even think about it. However, UAE has leverage thanks to this ban, which has the potential to force Microsoft and Apple to invest in UAE in the form of data centers, retail presence, etc. resulting in job creation and a boost to the economy
  4. Despite UAE's significant digitalization lead, these telecommunications companies' boards are still "old school." they are not pushing forward with times, where Information is the new treasure trove. Because VOIP calls require data to function, they simply have the option of increasing data costs. Simply stated. By making data a little bit more expensive, they can easily achieve their current revenue level.
